Truckee River Clean-Up Day

Saturday, September 27th, 2008, from 9am to noon

Thank you to all of our volunteers, partners and sponsors at the 11th annual Truckee River Clean-up Day. This was the most successful clean-up ever with 628 volunteers at 12 parks and on the river. Over 30 tons of trash was collected, 153 yards of mulch was spread, trails were cleared, trees were wrapped, and 103 storm drains were stenciled.   This event is made possible by a grant from the Truckee River Fund and Community Foundation of Western Nevada, whose support makes this event bigger and better each year creating community awareness of the importance of the Truckee River. In addition, this year a generous donation the Orange County Community Foundation.

The team of community partners that makes this event happen is unbelievable in their dedication and ability to make a huge undertaking easy.    Our parks team was made up of City of Reno, City of Sparks and Washoe County Departments of Parks and Recreation supplying staff at park locations, tools and supplies for volunteers. Different Strokes kayaking, Tahoe Whitewater Tours, and the Truckee River Foundation geared up our kayakers from Mayberry to Cottonwood Park.

Supplies for volunteers were plentiful with water by Savemart, water bottles by REI and storm drain stencil kits by the Truckee River Flood Project. Savemart and Great Basin Brewery filled up the hard working volunteers at the BBQ. Project leaders consisted of Big Brothers Big Sisters, REI, Reno Sparks Indian Colony, Sierra Pacific Power Co., Savemart, Envirolution, Nevada EcoNet and Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful recruiting and encouraging enthusiastic volunteers.

Each year Nevada EcoNet and Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful strive to make this event organized, advertised and enjoyable to the best of our abilities. We could not do it without each and everyone’s time, energy and devotion to the Truckee River. Best of all we enjoy working with this entire team and looking forward to 12th annual Truckee River Clean-up with you next year.
